Huck Seed busted out at sixth... it wasn't his fault it was the cards

Ultimate Casino Search

A completely card dead Huck Seed busted out of the World Series of Poker Champions Invitational on Monday night in sixth place.

Here's the PokerNews report:

Huck Seed Exits in Sixth

A card-dead Huck Seed watched and waited as big hands landed elsewhere, but trimmed down to under 6,000, he finally had to make his stand. Seed got his last 5,800 in with {K-Spades}{J-Diamonds} but was dominated by Carlos Mortensen’s {K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}.

The {8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} flop all but slammed the door on Seed’s tournament, giving Mortensen top pair and a flush draw. Seed needed running straight cards or back-to-back jacks to stay alive, and indeed, the {J-Clubs} came off on the turn. However, the {2-Hearts} river quietly ended Seed’s day.

Just short of unbelievable, Thang Luu successfully repeated as the Event 3, $1,500 Omaha Hi/Lo 8-or-better champion at this year's World Series of Poker.

From PokerNews write-up:

Thang Luu Successfully Defends Title

Thang Luu pulled off an historic victory in Event #3, $1,500 Omaha Hi/Lo 8-or-Better as he bested a record field to take home the bracelet for the same World Series of Poker event for two years running. Luu came to this event as the defending champion, having taken down last year’s $1,500 Omaha Hi/Lo Event (then numbered as Event 6) at the WSOP, and he also finished second in a $2,000 Omaha Hi/Lo event at the 2007 WSOP. With this back-to-back championship, Luu earns a place in the World Series of Poker record books.

Antonius has back problems? Must have pulled something kicking Durrrr's butt

Patrik Antonius, originally uploaded by pokerwire.

Ultimate Casino Search

Patrick Antonius was a no-show at the $1,000 World Series of Poker "Stimulus" event over the weekend and the official live broadcast blamed "back problems". We certainly hope "back problems" means he found a better cash game somewhere else. Antonius is not really a tournament player anyway. And he did manage to increase his DurrrrChallenge lead over the weekend as well, so we hope everything's fine.

Make sure you stretch Patrick, before you kick more Tom Dwan's ass.

The DurrrrChallenge write-up:

Patrik Antonius Suffering from Back Problems?

In case you missed the official World Series of Poker (WSOP) coverage of the $1,000 buy-in Stimulus Special No Limit Hold’em tournament, Maya Gellar revealed to tournament officials why her significant other was a no-show to the event. She explained that Patrik Antonius’ back is “hurt and he’s waiting for the cash games at the Bellagio.”

The quote is taken from the official WSOP live coverage. Around the same time, play resumed in the Tom Dwan Million Dollar Challenge, with the contest officially surpassing the 15,000 hand mark.

We hope that Antonius can recover in time for the 2009 WSOP Main Event, which begins on July 3rd with the first of four starting days. With 16 hour sessions the norm in that event, back problems could pose a significant problem.

The Main Event does not play down to its final table until July 15th. Health issues or not, Antonius faced off against Brian Townsend in May 22nd’s Friday Night Fights on Full Tilt Poker and has been relatively active online.

Greg Raymer and Justin Bonomo share a chuckle at the WSOP $40K final table

Lunkin wins the $40K buy-in event at the WSOP

Ultimate Casino Search

After a long battle at the final table, Vitaly Lunkin was only player left standing. And has standing on a winner's prize of nearly $1.9 million.

Here's a quick write-up from PokerNews:
Congratulations to Vitaly Lunkin, Winner of Event No. 2, the $40,000 buy-in Special 40th Annual No-Limit Hold'em Event

After four hard-fought days of play, Vitaly Lunkin made it through one of the toughest fields ever assembled for a no-limit hold'em tournament, outlasting exactly 200 other competitors to take the gold bracelet for Event No. 2, the $40,000 buy-in Special 40th Annual No-Limit Hold'em Event. The win marks Lunkin's second WSOP bracelet.

Isaac Haxton was the chip leader when the day began, with Ted Forrest and Noah Schwartz sitting on the short stacks. Both Forrest and Schwartz went out early, then Lex "RaSZi" Veldhuis followed them to the rail after pushing all in with {A-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} only to run into Greg Raymer's pocket kings. That hand gave Raymer the chip lead, and the Fossilman was still in the top spot as Alec Torelli fell in sixth. Then Lunkin gradually began chipping up past Raymer and toward the eight million-chip mark, winning almost all of his pots without showing a hand.

Justin Bonomo was the next to fall after shoving his stack on a ten-high flop with pocket jacks and getting called by Haxton who held {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}. The remaining four battled through the dinner break and for more than forty hands altogether before Dani "Ansky" Stern was bounced when his {Q-Hearts}{10-Clubs} couldn't catch up to Haxton's {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}.

After a few hands of three-handed play, Raymer, Haxton, and Lunkin all had almost exactly 8 million-chip stacks. With all three having almost exactly 50 big blinds each, it appeared we might be seeing a lot more poker before losing another player. But suddenly a huge pot developed between Haxton and Raymer, with all of their chips going in the middle on the strength of Haxton's pocket nines and Raymer's pocket fives. No five came to save Raymer, and the Fossilman hit the rail in third.

When heads up play began, Haxton had a bit more than a 2-to-1 chip advantage over his Russian counterpart. But it only took Lunkin seven hands to wrest the advantage away from Haxton. About an hour later, Haxton won nine straight hands and retook the lead. A sequence of huge, dramatic hands followed. First Lunkin doubled up to take the lead. Then Haxton hit a five-outer on the river to top Lunkin's pocket aces and retake the advantage. Then Lunkin doubled again. Finally, a short-stacked Haxton ran into Lunkin's aces, and this time couldn't catch the needed cards to crack them.
